Schiller Park Fire Station (Division 20) recently welcomed a brand-new Pierce Impel engine in March. At first glance, the Impel and the Velocity look nearly identical, as they share the same cab design. However, the differences lie in their features, trim levels, and overall cost, making each model suited for different operational needs.
The new Pierce Impel 1,500/500/30A engine has already made an impression with its modern design and advanced capabilities. One notable feature is its low hose bed, which has gained popularity in recent years. This design, similar to ones used in New York City for many years, offers improved stability and easier access during emergency operations.
Inside the engine, the pump panel includes a foam system and color-coded gauges, enhancing both functionality and safety. The unit was originally built in 2007 as a demonstrator for Pierce, which explains the lack of chevron striping on the rear—something that would typically be added for active service.
Recently, Engine 455 was deployed to Bensenville and Chicago for joint training exercises with local firefighters. The training took place in buildings being demolished as part of the O’Hare Modernization Project, providing a realistic environment for practicing fire suppression techniques.
A full gallery of photos and a video segment capturing the event are available for viewing. These materials offer a great look at the new apparatus and the teamwork between departments during the training. It’s always inspiring to see how fire departments collaborate to improve skills and readiness.
