Schiller Park Fire Station (Division 20) recently received a brand-new Pierce Impel engine in March, marking a significant upgrade for the department. At first glance, the Impel and the Velocity may look similar due to their shared cab design, but they differ significantly in terms of features, trim levels, and overall cost. The Impel offers enhanced capabilities, making it a more versatile choice for modern firefighting needs.
The new Pierce Impel 1,500/500/30A engine is now stationed at Schiller Park, and it has already begun its service. This unit is equipped with a low hose bed design, which has gained popularity in recent years. This design is reminiscent of models used for many years in New York City, offering better accessibility and maneuverability in tight spaces.
Inside the engine, the pump panel includes a foam system and color-coded gauges, providing firefighters with clear and immediate information during emergencies. These details highlight the advanced technology and safety features integrated into the new apparatus.
In addition to its technical upgrades, Engine 455 had an opportunity to participate in a joint training exercise with firefighters from Bensenville and Chicago. The training took place in buildings scheduled for demolition as part of the O’Hare Modernization Project. This collaboration allowed crews to practice real-world scenarios in a controlled environment, enhancing their readiness and teamwork.
Interestingly, the current engine was originally built in 2007 and served as a demonstrator for Pierce before being acquired by Schiller Park in March. This explains the lack of chevron striping on the rear, as it was never used in active service. Now fully operational, the Impel is ready to serve the community with reliability and efficiency.
