Dehydrated Vegetables: Chaoyang Industry in New Rural Construction

In Qixian County, with a production base of 200,000 mu and over 100,000 rural households, the vegetable dehydration industry has become a cornerstone of economic development, particularly around Huize City. This enterprise, representing China, exports 100% of its products to international markets. With state-of-the-art equipment and an annual capacity of 5,000 tons, it is one of the largest vegetable processing centers in northern China. The company's reputation has attracted foreign distributors who are eager to place orders, often asking, “How much do you need?” Farmers have benefited greatly, as potato prices now match those of wheat. As a people-owned business, it prioritizes farmer welfare, ensuring that local communities share in the success. This year’s spring planting season saw farmers from Qingshuihe County and surrounding areas working tirelessly, sowing hope and harvest. The vegetable dehydration sector has emerged as a key player in the new rural construction, driving growth and transformation. In early May, reporters visited Qingcaohe Village and found vibrant farming scenes everywhere. At village intersections, banners read, “If you want to be rich, grow potatoes,” and “One family’s success leads to the whole village’s prosperity.” A local villager, Changcao Zonghou, shared how potatoes and sorghum were once the main crops in the cold highlands of Yeongchuang Township. Last year, 40,000 mu of potatoes were harvested and sold at premium prices, significantly boosting per capita income. With the support of the township government, potato cultivation has expanded to over 50,000 mu this year, and new technologies are being introduced to meet the needs of the local dehydration plant. Though some may not be familiar with the Qingshuihe Vegetable Dehydration Plant, many recognize the former Lamawan Fruit Processing Plant. Originally known for fruit peels and hawthorn slices, it transitioned into a vegetable dehydration factory in 1992. Yang Yang, the current chairman, recalls how he first discovered dehydrated vegetables while eating Master Kong noodles in 1991. Inspired by the concept, he partnered with the manufacturer and launched the Qingshuihe plant. To ensure quality, they introduced Japanese Kuroda carrots, which are vibrant red and far superior to traditional yellow varieties. Initially, farmers were hesitant to plant them, so the company provided free seeds and guaranteed a minimum price. Within a few years, demand grew, and the base expanded to cover more than 200,000 mu across multiple counties. The company’s growth was rapid. From an initial output of 400 tons, it reached over 1,000 tons by 2000. It became a major supplier for well-known brands like Kangshifu, Unification, and Hualong. In 2001, it gained export rights and started shipping to Japan, the U.S., Australia, and other regions. By 2003, it invested $2.5 million to import advanced Italian machinery, capable of processing 120 tons daily. In 2005, it earned ISO certifications and became the largest vegetable processing center in northern China. Today, it produces a range of dehydrated vegetables, including potatoes, carrots, red beets, white onions, and red soy peppers. A U.S. distributor recently visited the factory, impressed by its facilities and signed a large contract on the spot, saying, “How much do you need?” In Liu Erying Village, a 2,000-mu carrot order has given over 200 families hope for a bountiful harvest. Villagers have seen their incomes rise from 500 yuan to 2,000 yuan per mu since switching from corn to carrots. Their lives have improved dramatically—adobe houses are replaced with brick homes, and many own cars and tractors. The industry has also boosted local transportation and related sectors. Driven by companies like the Qingshuihe Vegetable Dehydration Plant, the dehydrated vegetable industry has transformed rural life, becoming a green and sustainable path for agricultural restructuring and a sunrise sector in new rural development.
