Mercedes-Benz new V-type 6-cylinder 3.5L engine was successfully developed

Mercedes-Benz has successfully developed a new V6 3.5L engine, marking a significant step forward in performance and efficiency. DaimlerChrysler recently announced the completion of this advanced power unit, which will first be installed in the next-generation compact roadster, the SLK, starting from spring 2004. This 24-valve engine features four valves per cylinder, delivering a maximum output of 200 kW and peak torque of 350 Nm. Notably, the torque is available as early as 2500 rpm and can be sustained up to 5000 rpm, ensuring strong acceleration across a wide range of engine speeds. One of the most innovative aspects of the engine is its 90° V-configuration, which helps reduce overall engine height and improve packaging flexibility. The engine block, cylinder head, and crankcase are all constructed from aluminum alloy, significantly reducing weight while maintaining structural integrity. On both the intake and exhaust sides, a hydraulic continuously variable valve timing system is used, allowing for precise control of valve operation and improved fuel efficiency. The intake manifold is made from magnesium alloy and features a "Tumble Flap" mechanism. This design enhances turbulence in the combustion chamber at low engine speeds by closing the lower part of the intake port, improving air-fuel mixture and boosting low-end torque. To further reduce friction and weight, the cylinder liners are crafted from an aluminum-silicon alloy, cutting the weight of each cylinder by approximately 500 grams. The engine's bore and stroke measure 92.9 mm by 86.0 mm, with a bore distance of 106 mm and a compression ratio of 10.7:1, reflecting a high-performance design. Additionally, it meets the Euro 4 emission standards, demonstrating Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to environmental responsibility without compromising on power or driving dynamics. This new engine represents a major leap in technology, offering drivers a blend of power, efficiency, and innovation.
