Xinjiang will build the world's largest sodium nitrate (potassium) base
Zhejiang Vientiane Group is set to invest 4 billion yuan in a large-scale sodium nitrate (and potassium) production project in Shanshan County, Xinjiang, aiming to establish the area as the world's largest production base for these critical minerals. Liu Lipeng, head of the group’s saltpetre resource development in Xinjiang, recently confirmed the plan to reporters.
The group entered Shanshan County last year and initially invested 10 million yuan in exploratory work. After six months of field surveys, they discovered a significant sodium nitrate deposit, which is considered a rare and valuable resource. On-site assessments revealed that the total reserves amount to approximately 171 million tons, making it the largest such deposit globally.
Currently, only two major deposits of this kind exist worldwide: one in Shanshan County, Xinjiang, and another in Chile. The Chilean deposit has reserves of about 90 million tons, while no other countries have reported similar resources. According to Liu Lipeng, the mineral can be processed into high-quality natural potassium nitrate and sodium nitrate—products that are in short supply both in China and globally. These fertilizers offer greater added value and environmental benefits compared to traditional options like potassium sulfate or chloride, making them a rare and eco-friendly alternative in the global market.
The project has now moved from the exploration phase to technological research. Xinjiang Saltpetre Potash Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Zhejiang Vientiane Group, has partnered with three of China's top chemical research institutes to develop new technologies. Small-scale trials are currently underway, with plans for industrial-scale testing soon. The entire project is expected to cost 4 billion yuan, with the first phase targeting an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons of potassium and sodium nitrate, requiring an investment of 1.2 billion yuan. This initiative is also recognized as a key project under the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" in the region.
