In the 1920s, a service station at 2064 W. Lake Street became the birthplace of Hanover Park's firefighting efforts, housing the village's first fire department.

Recently, I came across an interesting piece from the Chicago Tribune website that highlighted the origins of Hanover Park’s firefighting history. Back in the 1920s, a modest service station stood at the corner of 2064 W. Lake Street, and it didn’t just pump gas—it also served as the home base for the village’s firefighting equipment. Over time, this location transformed into what we now know as the Ontarioville Volunteer Fire Department, a name that still carries historical weight today.

The fire department was officially established on April 3, 1928, thanks to a community-driven fundraising effort that managed to collect $282. This small sum marked the beginning of something much bigger, laying the foundation for Hanover Park's emergency services. The same spot where this service station once stood now houses the Suburban Tire Auto Repair Center, though it remains etched in history with a commemorative heritage marker.

I had the chance to learn more about this story when Hanover Park Fire Chief Craig A. Haigh, along with over 50 residents, gathered to unveil a plaque honoring the site’s significance. It was a touching moment that brought together past and present. Hanover Park Fire Lieutenant Jim Hite, who grew up visiting the area with his late father, Glen Hite—a former volunteer firefighter—recalled how things have changed dramatically since those early days. He mentioned that back then, the response time to reach Sherman Hospital was around eight minutes. “Nowadays,” he joked, “it feels like we’re lucky if we can get across town in that time!”

Jim also fondly remembered a 1962 Harvester fire truck that was once stationed there. While it never served as an active response vehicle, it was a familiar sight at parades and community events. Reflecting on the evolution of firefighting in Hanover Park, Jim noted that while the reliance on volunteers has diminished, their contributions remain vital, especially in areas like rehabilitation units.

Today, Hanover Park boasts a full-time fire department, yet the spirit of volunteerism continues to thrive. It’s fascinating to see how such humble beginnings paved the way for modern emergency services.
