This just came in from Larry Shapiro:
Firefighters were dispatched to the site of a severe head-on collision this afternoon on Old McHenry Road, just north of Cuba Road in Long Grove. Upon their arrival, they found one vehicle involved in a collision with a semi-truck, and the car was fully engulfed in flames. The driver of the car was trapped inside, but thanks to the quick response of the firefighters, they were able to extricate him swiftly and rush him to Condell Hospital.
The fire had already spread to the passenger compartment of the car, but the firefighters managed to contain it relatively quickly. Interestingly, the semi-truck was parked on the shoulder of the road—on the northbound side but facing southbound—as its driver was in the process of unloading building materials using a piggyback truck-mounted forklift up a lengthy driveway. He noticed smoke coming from the direction of the road but didn’t hear any sounds of impact. As soon as he realized what had happened, he tried to put out the flames with an extinguisher, which was later joined by a Lake County Sheriff's deputy until the fire department arrived.
Here are some photos taken from the scene:

This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly accidents can escalate, especially when vehicles are traveling at high speeds or under hazardous conditions. It’s fortunate that both the driver and the first responders were able to manage the situation effectively, minimizing potential harm.
