Mercedes-Benz new V-type 6-cylinder 3.5L engine was successfully developed

Mercedes-Benz has successfully developed a new 3.5L V6 engine, marking a significant step forward in performance and efficiency. DaimlerChrysler recently announced the completion of this advanced powerplant, which will first be installed in the new SLK roadster starting in spring 2004. The engine features a 24-valve design with four valves per cylinder, delivering a maximum output of 200 kW and peak torque of 350 Nm. Notably, it reaches maximum torque at just 2,500 rpm, and maintains strong performance up to 5,000 rpm. One of the standout innovations is its 90° V-shape configuration, which helps reduce engine height for better vehicle design. The engine block, cylinder head, and crankcase are all made from lightweight aluminum alloy, contributing to overall weight reduction. It also incorporates hydraulic continuous variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust sides, enhancing responsiveness and fuel efficiency. Additionally, the intake system uses a magnesium alloy component that can switch between different intake port configurations. A "Tumble Flap" mechanism is integrated to improve air flow dynamics, particularly at low speeds by restricting the lower portion of the intake port, thereby increasing valve lift and turbulence for better combustion. To further reduce friction and weight, the cylinder liners are made from an aluminum-silicon alloy, cutting the weight of each cylinder by approximately 500 grams. The engine features an overbore of 92.9 mm and a stroke of 86.0 mm, with a bore distance of 106 mm and a compression ratio of 10.7:1. This combination ensures high performance while maintaining fuel economy. The new engine also meets the Euro 4 emission standards, demonstrating Mercedes-Benz's commitment to environmental responsibility without compromising on power or driving experience. With these advancements, the 3.5L V6 promises to deliver a refined and dynamic driving experience in the upcoming SLK model.
