Large mulch fire in McCook, 12-28-13

The McCook Fire Department has been tackling a significant mulch fire since early morning at the location on 5300 Lawndale. For much of the day, they relied on a tanker shuttle system to transport water due to the challenging access to the fire site, which is located behind an enormous mulch pile with no direct route for firefighting equipment. As the afternoon progressed, the department decided to release the tankers and called in additional resources from Chicago. They requested a hose wagon (6-1-2) and a turret wagon (6-7-6), marking what is believed to be the first deployment of the newly acquired 6-7-6 unit. The presence of these reinforcements signifies a strategic shift in their approach to managing the extensive blaze. Several individuals, including Josh Boyajian and Tim Olk, have been present at the scene, contributing updates and capturing valuable images. I’m grateful for the photos that have already been shared, and I eagerly anticipate receiving more visuals later tonight. This incident is expected to require a prolonged firefighting effort. Here’s a glimpse of the ongoing operation through some of the images provided by those on-site. [Insert Image 1 Caption] A large mulch pile continues to burn fiercely in McCook. It’s clear that their efforts will span several hours, if not days, given the complexity of the fire and the materials involved. I’ll keep you updated as developments unfold.
