Autodesk to Acquire The Wild, Extended Reality (XR) Solutions Provider for Immersive and Collaborative Workspaces for Design and Construction

San Francisco – March 24, 2022 – Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has announced a definitive agreement to acquire The Wild, an innovative cloud-connected extended reality (XR) platform that includes its flagship solutions, The Wild and IrisVR. This strategic move aims to enhance Autodesk’s capabilities in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), supporting the evolving needs of the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.

The Wild empowers AEC professionals to collaborate and review projects in immersive, interactive experiences from anywhere at any time. With over 700 customers globally across its platforms, The Wild's XR technologies provide affordable, on-demand, and context-aware collaboration tools. These solutions are particularly valuable in today's dynamic work environment, enabling remote teams to work together effectively through virtual meetings and real-time design reviews.

“Our acquisition of The Wild reflects the rapid transformation happening in the building industry,” said Andrew Anagnost, CEO and president of Autodesk. “XR is a must-have business imperative for today and an essential part of our Forge platform vision.”

The Wild's virtual platform allows teams to work within digital project models in the cloud, making changes and exploring designs collaboratively. This approach leads to faster decisions and improved project outcomes while reducing costs associated with traditional in-person methods.

Gabe Paez, founder and CEO of The Wild, added, “The Wild and Autodesk share a common mission of fostering a more productive and collaborative AEC industry. Our customers appreciate the value of virtual collaboration, allowing teams to resolve issues quickly and efficiently without the need for costly travel.”

Black & Veatch, a global leader in engineering and construction, uses The Wild’s IrisVR and various Autodesk solutions to connect their teams, clients, and partners through digital workflows. By leveraging immersive virtual meetings, they enhance engagement and improve collaboration between stakeholders, leading to better project outcomes and safety awareness.

“As remote collaboration becomes the norm, systems like Autodesk Construction Cloud and The Wild’s IrisVR platform help us deliver world-class projects regardless of our team’s location,” said Brian Melton, Technology Innovation Lead at Black & Veatch. “This spatial, real-scale immersive experience is a game-changer for our professionals, enabling us to meet virtually within the project design environment and streamline our workflow.”

Why XR Now?

Nic Fonta, General Manager of XR at Autodesk, emphasized, “The convergence of events makes this the right time for Autodesk’s acquisition of The Wild. Accessibility, affordability, and the future of digital twins and the metaverse create the perfect environment for advancing XR technology in the AEC industry.”

  • Resiliency: The global pandemic has increased the need for remote collaboration. XR solutions offer a way to keep teams connected and projects moving with minimal disruption.
  • Accessibility and Affordability: The cost of VR and AR equipment has decreased significantly, making these technologies more accessible to a broader audience.
  • Sustainability: In-person collaboration often involves costly travel and contributes to carbon emissions. Cloud-based collaboration reduces these environmental impacts and saves resources.

The Wild and IrisVR integrate data from various AEC technologies into their XR collaborative experiences, facilitating design reviews and model coordination. Existing integrations include Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revit, Navisworks, as well as non-Autodesk tools like Rhinoceros and Trimble SketchUp.
