Fresh from Amsterdam, Autodesk Flame is making a big splash just in time for IBC 2016. The latest release, Autodesk Flame 2017 Extension 1, brings powerful new tools designed to enhance 3D visual effects, compositing, and finishing workflows.
This update introduces improved 3D scene navigation that’s more intuitive, especially for those new to the software. It also includes enhanced collaboration features, allowing smoother integration with Autodesk and third-party 3D animation tools. Artists can now work more efficiently with multichannel EXR render passes, while improvements in render quality and color management make the final output even sharper and more consistent.
"Flame 2017 Extension 1 was developed with input from our users, focusing on making 3D workflows more fluid and aligned with industry standards like Maya," said Marc Stevens, Vice President of Film and Television at Autodesk. "From better color handling to batch compositing tools, we’ve addressed key requests to help artists work faster and more creatively."
One of the standout additions is the new compass tool, which streamlines the process of navigating complex scenes. This feature, along with enhanced EXR handling and improved pipeline integration, makes Flame even more versatile for high-end post-production tasks.
Highlights of the 2017 Extension 1 include:
- **Maya-inspired 3D navigation**: Makes it easier for artists to move through 3D scenes with greater control.
- **Enhanced FBX export**: Improved compatibility with Maya and other 3D tools, allowing seamless project transfers.
- **Better color management**: Streamlines the finishing process with more accurate color grading.
- **Upgraded rendering**: Features physically based rendering (PBR) and a library of 60 Substance textures for more realistic 3D visuals.
- **EXR improvements**: Multi-channel EXRs are now easier to handle, import, and manage as single clips.
- **Batch workflow enhancements**: Now project-independent, making remote collaboration and asset transfer more efficient.
