We achieved breakthroughs in seawater desalination treatment in Asia, and the cost per tonne of desalination is basically equal to that in tap water.

A few days ago, the reporter learned from the Hangzhou Water Treatment Technology Research and Development Center of the State Oceanic Administration that the center is currently undertaking a sub-sea desalination project with a daily treatment capacity of 100,000 tons, and construction has begun. The implementation of the project will become a major breakthrough in the Asian seawater desalination field in China, and it indicates that China has the capacity to process 100,000 tons of membrane water in the sea in Japan. The large-scale Asian seawater desalination technology capacity in China will be further improved.

According to the relevant personnel from the Hangzhou Water Treatment Center of the State Oceanic Administration of the Construction Unit, the center gave full play to the industry technology piloting role of the National Liquid Separation Membrane Engineering Technology Research and Development Center, and adopted the most advanced full-membrane process in the world. Through the implementation of this project, China will promote the development of large-scale unconventional water resources technologies.

It is understood that the owner of the project is a paper company in the Pearl River Estuary. The scale of production is quite large, with daily water consumption of more than 150,000 tons, and the area's fresh water resources are insufficient. Therefore, the company decided to solve the water supply problem through the desalination of seawater. According to the relevant personnel of the Hangzhou Water Treatment Center, the cost of treatment of seawater desalination in Asia is much lower than that of pure seawater desalination. With the current level of technology that Hangzhou Water Treatment Center can achieve, the cost per ton of seawater desalination is around 5 yuan, while the cost per ton of subtropical seawater desalination is only around 2 yuan, which is basically the same as the current tap water supply price. Therefore, for large water-consuming households with abundant water resources in the Asia-Pacific region, it is entirely feasible to use a sub-atmosphere desalination plant.
