The settlement agreement is for the four allegations made by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 2004 regarding DuPont’s violation of the Toxic Substance Control Act and the Resource Protection Act. Mr. Ma Bole, senior vice president and global chief legal adviser of DuPont, said: 'We have different understandings with the EPD on the relevant technical reporting procedures. The settlement agreement allows us to cross over these and focus on the future. DuPont has reduced the emissions of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and its salts (PFOA) in its US facility by 98%, and is working to reduce it by 99% in 2007. '
DuPont also stated that research conducted by the company and independent scientific research personnel have confirmed that bedding and other consumer products made from DuPont materials or using DuPont's raw materials are safe for consumers. .
It is understood that DuPont will pay $10.25 million as a fine and another $6.25 million for two additional environmental protection projects related to the settlement agreement.
The US Environmental Protection Agency said it will continue to assess the risk of PFOA and PFOA to determine if there are any issues that need to be responded to in the regulatory context.
