Palatine Rural FPD to sell ad space on apparatus

The *Daily Herald* recently reported on a bold new initiative by the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District (PRFPD) to generate additional revenue: selling advertising space on their fire trucks and ambulances. This move, if approved, would make them the first fire department in Illinois to do so. The decision comes at a challenging time for the district. Last week, they lost a vote on a proposed tax increase that would have brought in an extra $200,000 annually. With rising emergency calls and declining property tax revenues, the PRFPD is under financial pressure. Chief Hank Clemmensen described the situation as "desperate," emphasizing that the ad revenue will be crucial for keeping operations running smoothly. "We’re kind of in a desperate situation here," Clemmensen said. "The money we get from these ads will be critical to our operation, unfortunately." He assured that the advertisements will be tasteful and not overly flashy. The ads will be placed on the sides near the rear of the district’s only fire truck and on the back of their lone ambulance. "It’s not going to look like a race car," he added, noting that he will have final approval over the design. The PRFPD is working with Arizona-based Public Safety Advertising, a company founded by a firefighter who wants to help struggling departments boost income without raising taxes. Clemmensen has been considering this idea for some time, especially after the district saw a $300,000 drop in revenue between 2012 and 2013 — a 9% decline. Even if the tax hike had passed, Clemmensen said he would have moved forward with the ad plan, which was unanimously approved by the district’s board on March 10. Now, with the tax increase rejected, the need for the ad revenue is even more urgent. According to Public Safety Advertising, the district could earn between $20,000 and $25,000 per year from the ads. This isn’t the first time a fire department has turned to advertising for funding. Across the country, several fire departments have adopted similar strategies, including those in Arizona, New York, and Maryland. Some examples include the Apache Junction Fire Department, ABC15Arizona, MyFoxPhoenix.com, and others. Thanks, Dan.
