Oshkosh moving Medtec and Specialty Vehicles to Florida

Firegeezer.com reports that Oshkosh is shutting down its Medtec facilities in Pidgeon, Michigan, and Goshen, Indiana, and shifting production to the Pierce facility in Bradenton, Florida. This move marks a significant restructuring of Oshkosh's operations, with the Medtec Ambulance unit set to be relocated and combined with Pierce Manufacturing in Bradenton. The consolidation is expected to bring between 100 and 150 new manufacturing and office jobs to the area. The relocation efforts are anticipated to qualify Oshkosh for up to $1.44 million in economic development incentives. The funding will come from the state of Florida, which will contribute $1.07 million, along with $333,732 from Manatee County and $40,000 from Pinellas County. In addition to the Medtec units, Oshkosh Specialty Vehicles, which operates plants in Harvey and Calumet City, Illinois, is also relocating its operations to Florida. The company, known for producing high-tech mobile medical imaging vehicles and transportable trailers, will merge its operations with the Clearwater-based division of Frontline, a manufacturer of command and communications vehicles and broadcast units. Oshkosh has committed to offering an average annual salary of at least $57,897 for the new positions in Clearwater—more than 150% of the local average wage of $38,598 in Pinellas County. This move is expected to bring much-needed employment to the region, especially in Manatee County, where the unemployment rate stands at 12.6%, with over 18,000 people currently unemployed. According to John Daggett, a spokesperson for Oshkosh Corp., the consolidation will lead to job cuts across several Midwest locations. Specifically, Medtec Ambulances will lay off 45 employees at its headquarters in Goshen, Indiana; 60 workers at its Goshen manufacturing plant; and 70 employees at its White Pigeon, Michigan, facility. Oshkosh Specialty Vehicles is also expected to cut 80 jobs at its Illinois plants. While these developments have not yet been officially posted on the Pierce or Oshkosh websites, the information was first reported by the St. Petersburg Times. Another local outlet, Brandenton.com, also covered the story, highlighting the growing interest in hiring for the newly created roles in Manatee County. With the need for skilled workers in the area, the shift is seen as a major opportunity for both the companies and the local economy.
