IBC 2016: Autodesk Flame Family Puts Artists First

Autodesk Flame has just launched its 2017 Extension 1, making a splash at IBC 2016 in Amsterdam. This major update introduces powerful new tools for 3D visual effects, compositing, and finishing, offering artists a more intuitive and efficient workflow. The extension brings enhanced 3D scene navigation, designed to be more user-friendly for newcomers while aligning with the familiar workflows of Autodesk Maya. It also improves collaboration between Flame and third-party 3D animation tools through a brand-new .FBX export feature, allowing for seamless project sharing and more flexible teamwork. Artists can now work more efficiently with multichannel EXR render passes, and there are significant improvements in color management and batch compositing. A new compass tool helps streamline the process, making it easier to navigate complex scenes. Marc Stevens, Vice President of Film and Television at Autodesk, said: “We’ve focused on making 3D navigation more intuitive and aligned with industry standards, while also addressing key user requests like better color management and batch tools. These updates make Flame even more powerful for creative professionals.” Some of the standout features include: - **Maya-inspired 3D navigation** for smoother and more fluid interaction with 3D elements. - **Enhanced compatibility** with Maya and other 3D software via improved .FBX support. - **Better color management** and pipeline integration for a more streamlined experience. - **Improved render quality** with physically based rendering (PBR) and a new set of 60 Substance textures from Allegorithmic. - **Advanced EXR handling** that allows multi-channel EXRs to be managed as a single clip. - **Batch compositing enhancements**, including background rendering from Lustre and automatic panel switching. - **Project-independent batch setups** that carry all necessary metadata for easy asset transfer. Flame Family 2017 Extension 1 is available globally through subscription starting October 13, 2016. For more details, visit Autodesk’s official Flame page.
