**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**
**June 20, 2023**
**PROSPECT HEIGHTS —** On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at approximately 12:37 p.m., the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District responded to a reported fire at 1209 N. Elmhurst Road in Prospect Heights.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed a significant amount of smoke coming from the rear of the building. A closer inspection revealed flames and heavy, dark smoke emerging from both the roof and the interior. The structure involved was a strip mall housing 12 businesses, with several adjacent stores quickly filling with smoke.
All tenants were safely evacuated, and fire crews immediately began suppression efforts using interior hoselines. The fire spread rapidly through the ceiling and roof space, prompting the use of aerial ladder trucks to apply water streams and prevent further escalation.
Due to the intensity of the fire and the potential for significant property loss, the incident commander activated the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), which brought additional firefighters from over a dozen surrounding departments to assist in the response.
Thankfully, no civilians were injured during the incident. One firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received medical attention. Fortunately, the apartment complex located behind the building remained unharmed throughout the event.
The fire was fully under control and extinguished within one hour of arrival, utilizing multiple hose lines, four aerial apparatus, and 26 fire units. Firefighters spent over three hours conducting thorough inspections to ensure there were no remaining hot spots or signs of rekindling.
As a result of the fire, all 12 businesses in the strip mall are currently displaced until the area is deemed safe and necessary repairs are completed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by local authorities.
The Prospect Heights Fire Protection District urges residents and business owners to always have two escape routes, ensure smoke detectors are working properly, and create an emergency plan in case of a fire or other disaster.
Fire sprinklers can make a critical difference in saving lives and protecting property. If this building had been equipped with a sprinkler system, the fire may have been contained or even extinguished before firefighters arrived.
Stay safe, stay prepared, and remember – prevention is always better than reaction.
Metal Assembly
Metal assembly refers to the process of joining two or more metal
components to create a single, functional unit. This process can be
accomplished through a variety of methods, including welding, brazing,
soldering, and mechanical fastening.
Welding involves melting the metal components at the joint and fusing
them together. This can be done using various heat sources, including
gas flames, electric arcs, and lasers. Welding is commonly used in the
construction of buildings, bridges, and other large structures.
Brazing and soldering are similar processes that involve melting a
filler material to join the metal components. Brazing uses a
high-temperature filler material, while soldering uses a
lower-temperature material. These processes are often used in the
manufacture of electronics and plumbing components.
Mechanical fastening involves using bolts, screws, or other fasteners to
hold the metal components together. This method is commonly used in the
assembly of machinery and vehicles.
Metal assembly is a critical process in many industries, including
manufacturing, construction, and transportation. It requires skilled
technicians and specialized equipment to ensure that the components are
joined correctly and that the final product meets the required
specifications.
