This year's Shanghai car price is expected to stabilize January 17 bid
This year, the Shanghai car license plate prices are expected to remain stable. According to information obtained from relevant authorities, the first private car bidding session of the year has been moved forward to January 17, ahead of the Spring Festival holiday. Due to the proximity of the bidding date and the holiday, it's possible that even if a bid is successful, the license may not be issued immediately after the festival. As a result, there might not be a large-scale centralized bidding event this year. Experts predict that the price rebound seen last year will return to normal levels.
Last year was a record-breaking year for private car license plates in Shanghai. The number of monthly licenses issued rose sharply, from around 3,000 to over 6,000. Meanwhile, the minimum bid price increased from 18,800 yuan in January to as high as 38,500 yuan in August, showing strong demand for private vehicles. However, much of the price increase was driven by dealers rather than genuine market demand. In January and August last year, the number of bidders was roughly 9,000, yet the price differences were huge. Some dealers inflated prices to sell cars more easily, often at the expense of consumers. This practice significantly impacted the market.
Looking at the price chart from last year, the lowest bid price dropped by as much as 10,000 yuan after August, falling from 38,500 yuan to 28,800 yuan. According to an official from Shanghai National Film Co., Ltd., this drop was due to technical measures taken to limit dealer-driven hype. Since the second half of last year, Shanghai authorities have implemented one-to-one bidding for citizens, along with restrictions on single-computer bids. These measures greatly reduced unfair practices by dealers who previously manipulated auction results. Soon after these changes, prices began to stabilize and remained relatively steady.
Although there was a slight rebound in December last year, the auction house explained it as a typical end-of-year fluctuation, not a sign of a new upward trend. For this year’s bidding, citizens don’t need to worry about raising their psychological expectations. It is also reported that license plates won’t be released soon due to existing restrictions like road controls. For a long time to come, the bidding system will remain the main method for private vehicle licensing, and it will continue to help manage the total number of vehicles in the city alongside the transition of Mobibus.
Additionally, the demand for private cars in Shanghai remains strong. Many new models expected to be launched by dealers this year are aimed at the family market. Given the current supply and demand dynamics, there won’t be a significant drop in license plate prices. At the same time, the government and auction houses will keep enforcing the current restrictions on dealer bidding activities. The public’s price ceiling has already been reached in the past year. Therefore, the overall license plate prices are expected to stay stable this year, with no major fluctuations.
