According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean government is taking proactive steps to boost the country’s energy independence by encouraging its state-owned natural gas company, the Korea Gas Corporation (Kogas), to acquire overseas gas fields. This move marks a shift in the nation's energy strategy, aiming to secure long-term energy supplies and reduce reliance on imports.
The transition comes as part of the incoming administration led by President-elect Lee Myung-bak, whose team has emphasized a more direct approach to resource acquisition. Instead of merely investing in potential gas projects, the new policy focuses on purchasing established reserves from foreign companies. This change reflects a strategic effort to enhance energy security and stabilize supply chains.
In the first half of 2007, South Korea's oil and natural gas self-sufficiency rate stood at just 3.8%. The government aims to raise this figure significantly, targeting an increase to 28% by 2016. This ambitious goal underscores the urgency of securing reliable energy sources amid rising global demand and geopolitical uncertainties.
Sources indicate that Kogas is actively evaluating potential gas fields for acquisition, with discussions underway about specific targets. Additionally, some analysts suggest that the government may also encourage Kogas and other local firms to participate in resource development projects in Western Siberia, further diversifying South Korea's energy portfolio.
Lee Myung-bak, who will officially assume the presidency on February 25, has made energy self-sufficiency a cornerstone of his economic policy. He has repeatedly stressed the importance of securing overseas resources to support sustainable growth. His administration's foreign policy is expected to align closely with these goals, promoting international partnerships to access critical energy assets.
