Retired Joliet Fire Chief Larry Walsh dies

The Herald-News recently published a tribute to the late Chief Larry M. Walsh, a respected figure in Joliet’s fire service community who passed away at the age of 77. Walsh, a 30-year veteran of the Joliet Fire Department, served as chief from 1991 to 1998 and was known for his deep commitment to both the department and the city. “Larry was passionate about the fire service and always put the needs of his team first,” said Deputy Fire Chief Ray Randich. “He had a personal connection with every firefighter, and he believed it was his responsibility to know each of them and look out for their well-being.” Walsh also played a key role in shaping the future of fire education by founding the fire science program at Joliet Junior College in 1970, where he remained a dedicated coordinator for over two decades. His influence extended beyond the firehouse—he was actively involved in legislative efforts to improve safety standards in Illinois. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m. at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, located at 3200 Black Road in Joliet. A funeral service is scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m., followed by a private burial. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance’s Burn Camp, which supports children who have suffered severe burn injuries. Larry was born on December 27, 1935, in Chicago, and spent much of his life in Joliet. He served in the 77th Special Forces before joining the fire service. His passions included the circus, model railroading, and the sound of sirens and calliope music. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; two sons, Richard and Scott; two daughters, Barbara and Lisa; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark. For more information, visit www.fredcdames.com or call (815) 741-5500.
