DSM Rogert teamed up to develop renewable polymers
DSM and French starch producer Roquette announced on January 18 that they are entering a strategic partnership to develop bio-functional materials, including polymers, using renewable succinic acid as a key raw material. This collaboration marks a significant step towards sustainable chemical production, leveraging biomass-based feedstocks instead of traditional fossil fuels.
Currently, succinic acid is primarily derived from crude oil and natural gas, and it serves as an essential intermediate in the production of high-performance polymers, as well as various industrial applications such as pharmaceuticals, food additives, and automotive components. The new initiative aims to replace these conventional sources with a more environmentally friendly alternative.
As part of the agreement, the two companies will establish a demonstration plant in France with an annual capacity of several hundred tons. This facility is expected to begin operations next year, paving the way for larger-scale production. DSM plans to construct a world-scale production facility within the next two years, significantly increasing the availability of bio-based succinic acid.
One of the key advantages of using renewable resources in the fermentation process is a reduction in energy consumption by 30% to 40%. Additionally, this approach helps lower carbon dioxide emissions, making it a more sustainable option for industrial manufacturing. By integrating green chemistry principles, this partnership is set to redefine the future of polymer and material science.
