On Monday evening, during a village board meeting in Buffalo Grove, the local fire department was honored with the presentation of an American flag that had been flown over the Base Defense Operation Center, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines Forward Camp Leatherneck, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The flag was given to Fire Chief Terry Vavra by Marine Sergeant William Adam Chapman, who is the nephew of two Buffalo Grove firefighters, Kevin Hauber and James Hauber.
The event took on a deeply personal meaning as both uncles were present, standing beside their nephew as he delivered the symbolic gesture. The flag was flown in recognition of the service and dedication of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department, highlighting the strong connection between military personnel and the communities they protect.
The ceremony was attended by numerous members of the fire department, as well as local officials and residents. As the flag was handed over, it was clear that this moment carried deep significance—not just for the fire department, but for the entire community.
Sergeant Chapman’s gesture was not only thoughtful but also meaningful. He reached out while on duty to request that the flag be flown in honor of his uncles and their department, showing a level of respect and appreciation that didn’t go unnoticed. Fire Chief Vavra expressed his gratitude, emphasizing how such acts of recognition make a lasting impact on those who serve.
“This may seem like a simple act, but it means so much,†said Chief Vavra. “It shows that even from thousands of miles away, someone remembers and honors the work we do.â€
