Here at Autodesk, we're always inspired by the innovative companies redefining design and manufacturing in meaningful ways. Recently, we celebrated a number of outstanding organizations at the third annual Design & Manufacturing Excellence Awards, held during Autodesk University in Las Vegas.
These awards recognize the incredible work being done across industries, showcasing how technology is shaping the future of innovation. Read on to discover how these visionary teams are leveraging cutting-edge tools to push boundaries and create groundbreaking solutions.
**Category: Innovator of the Year**
**Winner: Volkswagen Group of America**
To mark the 20th anniversary of its largest research facility outside Germany, the Volkswagen team reimagined the iconic VW bus — a symbol of the company’s heritage. With a focus on reducing weight while maintaining strength, they used generative design in collaboration with Autodesk to redesign the wheels, significantly lowering the vehicle's overall weight and rolling resistance.
The new wheels are 18% lighter than standard ones, and the development time was reduced from 1.5 years to just a few months. Generative design also helped rework the steering wheel, rear bench support, and side mirror mounts, resulting in a futuristic electric showcase vehicle that blends classic design with modern technology.
**Category: Industry Disruptor**
**Winner: Airbus**
Airbus is revolutionizing aerospace manufacturing through the use of generative design. Their Bionic Partition project has led to a lightweight, strong, and cost-effective solution for aircraft structures. By applying new constraints in generative design, the team optimized components like the vertical tail plane of the A320, improving mass, stiffness, and impact resistance.
Additionally, Airbus is exploring generative design for the layout of a new sustainable production facility, aiming to streamline workflows and improve efficiency for engine assembly.
**Category: Engineering the Impossible**
**Winner: Dynamic Attractions**
Dynamic Attractions has built a reputation for tackling the most complex engineering challenges. From massive bridges and telescopes to thrilling theme park rides, their work is a testament to creativity and precision. Using tools from the Product Design & Manufacturing Collection, they consistently deliver award-winning projects that redefine what's possible.
Their motto, “Anything you can dream, we can build,†reflects their commitment to pushing the limits of design and manufacturing.
**Category: Industry Collaboration**
**Winner: LASIMM**
LASIMM is a collaborative effort involving 10 European partners, aiming to build one of the world’s largest hybrid manufacturing machines. This machine combines additive and subtractive metal printing capabilities, capable of producing parts as large as 20 feet by 6 feet and weighing up to 4,500 pounds.
Powered by Autodesk Fusion 360 and PowerMill, LASIMM is setting new standards for industrial-scale hybrid manufacturing, offering cost and efficiency benefits over traditional methods.
**Category: Making a Better World**
**Winner: KickStart International**
In Africa, where millions of farmers struggle to feed their communities despite vast arable land, KickStart International is making a real difference. Through low-cost irrigation pumps, they help increase crop yields and incomes, enabling farmers to build sustainable businesses.
With support from the Autodesk Foundation, KickStart recently completed the design of the MoneyMaker Solar Pump using Autodesk Fusion 360. Currently being tested in Kenya, it's the most affordable solar pump available in Africa, helping lift thousands out of poverty. Since its inception, KickStart has sold over 330,000 pumps, created 250,000 businesses, and impacted nearly 1.5 million people.
