Wauconda firefighters were called to a garage fire this afternoon at 26703 N. Main Street, located in an unincorporated area of their jurisdiction. Upon arrival, crews discovered a two-story home with significant fire in the attached garage, which posed an immediate threat to the main living space. The incident was quickly escalated to a second alarm, prompting additional units from neighboring departments to respond.
Despite the intensity of the fire, the damage was largely confined to the garage, with only minimal structural impact on the house. Firefighters deployed two hose lines into the structure to prevent further spread and brought the flames under control within 30 minutes of the initial call. Smoke damage was widespread, but the fire did not fully engulf the residence.
Mutual aid support came from several departments, including Long Grove, Countryside, Fox Lake, Round Lake, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Barrington, Nunda, Lake Zurich, Cary, and Mundelein. These teams played a critical role in containing the blaze and assisting with overhaul operations.
Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene just as the fire was being extinguished and captured several photos of the response. His images show the extent of the damage, including a partial roof collapse and charred remnants of a vehicle inside the garage.
The Wauconda Fire Department used its tower ladder to monitor the situation from above, while a tanker truck provided water supply to support the engine working on the front of the house. Firefighters also worked to remove debris and ensure all hot spots were fully cooled down.
