As winter transitions into spring, the "Two Sessions" are once again upon us. This year’s event carries a unique significance, marking the first year following the 17th National Congress of the People's Republic of China and the 30th anniversary of the reform and opening-up policy. For the automotive industry, China is expected to see its vehicle production and sales surpass 10 million units this year. The sector is increasingly focusing on independent innovation, with energy conservation, emission reduction, and building a harmonious society becoming central goals. Meanwhile, automobile exports are entering a new phase of global competition, bringing both opportunities and challenges. In the lead-up to the “Two Sessions,” representatives from the automotive industry emphasized that only by thoroughly implementing the scientific concept of development and adhering to a path of sustainable growth can enterprises and industries achieve greater success. They stressed the importance of aligning development with people’s needs and ensuring that progress benefits all. At the heart of the scientific development concept is the idea of being people-oriented. This means ensuring that more workers and citizens can benefit from economic growth. Wang Tao, a senior technician and National Model Worker at Dongfeng Motor Commercial Vehicle Assembly Plant, shared his perspective: “Economic and business development have brought real benefits to regular employees. This year, our factory implemented a yearly salary system, which has improved our income and job security.” While the auto industry has made travel more convenient, urban parking has become a growing challenge. In response, the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce proposed developing three-dimensional parking systems to improve the automobile consumption environment and support the industry’s long-term development. Development must serve the people and rely on them. The scientific development of auto companies requires a diverse range of talents, from senior management to skilled workers. As Wang Tao noted, “Ordinary workers like me are now receiving more respect in the workplace.” Sustainable development is a fundamental requirement for the scientific approach. Li Shufu, chairman of Geely Group and a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, argued that the auto industry must pursue comprehensive, coordinated, and sustainable growth. He proposed strengthening the recycling of end-of-life vehicles to promote a circular economy, emphasizing that this is essential for the industry’s future. With rising energy costs and stricter emission standards, the industry is rethinking how to balance growth with environmental responsibility. Energy efficiency and green development will be key topics during the “Two Sessions.” Independent innovation remains a major focus. Representatives and members have engaged in deeper discussions about this issue this year. Li Guangxiu, chairman of Shuguang Automobile, called for faster localization of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses and the establishment of national standards. While some opposed the idea of a unified standard, he believed it was crucial for long-term industry growth. Li Shufu also advocated for setting technical standards tailored to China’s needs, saying, “China should develop its own vehicle technology standards that reflect its unique conditions.” Similarly, Li Dakai, newly elected to the National People’s Congress, highlighted the importance of parts innovation and intellectual property protection. Finally, scientific management by the government is vital for the industry’s development. Representatives offered various suggestions, including revising the “Automobile Brand Sales Management Measures” to support the healthy growth of dealerships. Others called for lifting restrictions on pickup trucks and improving incentives for energy-efficient vehicles. The “Two Sessions” continue to shape the direction of China’s automotive industry, reflecting a commitment to progress that is inclusive, sustainable, and driven by innovation.
