Retired Joliet Fire Chief Larry Walsh dies

The Herald-News has published a tribute to the late Chief Larry M. Walsh, a respected figure in Joliet's fire service and community. He passed away at the age of 77 on Wednesday at a hospice, surrounded by family. With a career spanning over 30 years, Walsh served as Fire Chief from 1991 to 1998 and was known for his deep commitment to both the department and the city. Deputy Fire Chief Ray Randich shared heartfelt memories of Walsh, highlighting his leadership and personal connection with every firefighter. "He was so dedicated to the fire service and the city. He was proud to be the fire chief," Randich said. "He considered everyone on the department as 'his guys.' He and his wife, Arlene, believed it was his duty to know each of us, and we knew he'd always look out for us." Walsh is remembered not only for his service but also for his contributions to education. In 1970, he founded the Fire Science Program at Joliet Junior College, where he remained a key figure for over two decades. His influence extended beyond the firehouse—he was involved in shaping state safety laws and was an active member of the Congressional Legislative Fire Caucus. A visitation will take place from 1 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, located at 3200 Black Road in Joliet. A funeral service is scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m., followed by a private burial. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance’s Burn Camp, which supports children who have suffered severe burn injuries. Larry Walsh, born on December 27, 1935, in Chicago, was a lifelong resident of Joliet. Before joining the fire service, he served in the 77th Special Forces. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; two sons, Richard and Scott; two daughters, Barbara and Lisa; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many cherished friends. He was predeceased by his son, Mark. In his later years, Walsh found joy in the sound of fire sirens, calliope music from the circus, and the gentle whistle of his model train layout. These small pleasures brought him comfort and happiness. For more information about the services or to make a donation, contact Fred C. Dames Funeral Home at (815) 741-5500 or visit www.fredcdames.com.
