Paraxylene should pay attention to connotative development

Paraxylene (PX) is a key raw material for producing purified terephthalic acid (PTA), which is essential for the textile and plastic industries. With the rapid growth of China's textile sector, the demand for PX has surged, creating a significant supply gap. Despite this, the development of PX projects remains challenging due to environmental constraints, high capital requirements, and limited access to upstream feedstocks. As a result, the industry must focus on connotative development—enhancing existing facilities through technological upgrades and operational efficiency—to achieve sustainable growth. In 2022, domestic PX production capacity reached 3.83 million tons, with an output of 2.62 million tons. However, consumption soared to 4.36 million tons, leading to an import dependency of 1.84 million tons, or 42% of total demand. Although production is expected to rise significantly this year, reaching 3.5 million tons, consumption is projected to climb further to 6.15 million tons. This growing imbalance highlights the urgent need for more efficient and sustainable PX production in China. Given the limitations on land, environmental resources, and investment, new projects are becoming increasingly difficult to implement. Therefore, the focus must shift toward connotative development, which emphasizes improving existing facilities rather than expanding through new construction. The National Development and Reform Commission’s “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” for PX clearly supports this approach, encouraging economies of scale, advanced technology, and the optimization of existing plants to enhance competitiveness. One notable example is Yangzi Petrochemical, China’s largest PX producer. Since its establishment in 1990, the company has grown from a capacity of 450,000 tons to 800,000 tons through two major technical upgrades. Without acquiring new land or hiring additional staff, it increased its capacity by 350,000 tons using advanced technologies. Recently, the company plans to boost its PX capacity to 1.2 million tons between 2007 and 2010 by introducing new adsorbents and partial process improvements. The cost of this expansion is estimated to be only 5% of what would be required for a new facility. Looking ahead, global PX capacity and demand are expected to grow at annual rates of 1.9% and 2.6%, respectively, from 2006 to 2011, with Asia—particularly China—being the main driver. Therefore, adopting advanced PX technologies and focusing on connotative development will be crucial for meeting future demand while ensuring environmental and economic sustainability.
