On Monday afternoon, firefighters from Wheeling and Prospect Heights responded to a reported crash at 100 E. Palatine Road. The location is on the westbound Palatine frontage road, east of the railroad tracks. Upon arrival, emergency personnel were directed to a vehicle that had veered off the road and slid down an embankment, coming to rest beneath a railroad bridge. The car’s sole occupant, who appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries, was trapped inside and unable to exit on their own. Firefighters used tools to force open the door, carefully extricated the individual, and transported them up the embankment using a backboard. The patient was then taken by ambulance to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Meanwhile, the vehicle was winched back onto the road by tow operators. The operation caused a temporary halt in train traffic in the area for approximately 30 minutes as crews worked beneath the bridge. The scene remained active for some time as emergency responders and tow trucks coordinated the recovery efforts. Local residents and drivers were advised to exercise caution in the area during the incident. Photos captured the dramatic moment the car was wedged under the bridge and later being lifted back onto the road, highlighting the complexity of the rescue operation.
