On Monday afternoon, firefighters from Wheeling and Prospect Heights were dispatched to 100 E. Palatine Road following a reported vehicle accident. The location is on the westbound frontage road of Palatine, east of the railroad tracks. Upon arrival, emergency responders were directed to a car that had veered off the road and rolled down an embankment, coming to rest beneath a railroad bridge. The single occupant of the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was unable to exit the car on their own. Firefighters used tools to force open the door, carefully extracted the individual, and transported them up the embankment using a backboard. The injured person was then taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
The car was later recovered by a tow truck, which winched it back onto the road. During the operation, train traffic in the area was temporarily suspended for approximately 30 minutes as firefighters and tow operators worked beneath the rail bridge. The incident caused some disruption but no major delays beyond the initial response time. Local residents and commuters were advised to exercise caution in the area while the cleanup and investigation were ongoing. Photos captured the dramatic scene of the car wedged under the bridge, as well as the efforts of Gene's Towing to restore the roadway to normal conditions.
