Completed the closure of 48 hazardous chemical companies in Shanghai
The adjustment of the layout for hazardous chemical production and storage enterprises in Shanghai has yielded promising results. According to recent reports from the Shanghai Work Safety Conference, the city made significant progress last year by completing the relocation or closure of 48 dangerous chemical companies. This included moving eight key firms from the Central Link and the Huangpu River Water Conservation Area to suburban zones, as well as closing or reorganizing 40 other related enterprises.
In addition, to enhance the safety of Shanghai as a global metropolis, the city introduced dynamic joint supervision for hazardous chemical transportation in 2007. It completed the installation of GPS systems on 6,000 hazardous material transport vehicles, improving real-time tracking and control. To ensure safer passage, 25 regular crossings and 12 dedicated routes for dangerous chemical vehicles were equipped with clear signage—some marked as prohibited, others as permitted.
On the equipment front, over one million gas cylinders and 1.2 million LPG cylinders were managed through an electronic labeling system at 109 filling stations. This initiative helped establish a comprehensive gas cylinder registration information management system, enhancing traceability and safety.
According to the latest report, this year Shanghai will continue to focus on strengthening safety regulations in key industries. Specifically, it plans to monitor and regulate 10 dangerous goods production and storage facilities located outside the outer ring road and in the upper reaches of the Huangpu River. These facilities may pose potential environmental risks, and the city will implement measures such as shutdowns or relocations to ensure public safety and environmental protection.
