Autodesk Releases Free App for Reviewing 3D Entertainment Assets

Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has officially launched Autodesk FBX Review at SIGGRAPH 2013, offering a powerful and lightweight tool for professional artists and animators to review a wide range of 3D assets directly on Windows 7 and Windows 8 devices. This standalone application is designed to streamline the asset review process, allowing teams to work more efficiently while maintaining high-quality, accurate representations of original designs. Chris Bradshaw, Senior Vice President of Autodesk Media & Entertainment, stated, “We’ve seen a growing need for faster project iteration without compromising the quality of digital assets. FBX Review helps creative teams—especially those working in decentralized or mobile environments—review and collaborate more effectively.” FBX Review provides a full-featured viewing experience that supports a variety of open 3D file formats, including .fbx, .3ds, .obj, and .dxf. Artists can use their preferred tools and then share files with anyone who has installed FBX Review, eliminating the need for commercial 3D software during the review phase. The app allows users to view assets with advanced features such as dynamic tessellation, displacement maps, skin deformations, real-time shadows, and image-based lighting—all within a DirectX 11-enabled viewport. For animation reviews, the app offers intuitive controls to play, pause, and scrub through different takes, as well as switch between camera angles and lighting setups. Whether using native cameras from the file or in-app perspective and orthographic views, users can easily navigate and assess complex 3D scenes. Designed specifically for Windows 8, the mobile version of FBX Review delivers the same robust feature set as the desktop version, but with a simplified, touch-friendly interface. It includes multi-view camera controls, allowing users to pan, zoom, and circle around 3D models. The app also features responsive animation playback and lighting controls, making it ideal for on-the-go reviews. FBX Review is available for free on the Windows Store for both mobile devices and desktops running Windows 7 or 8. You can download it directly from the Windows Store or via Autodesk Exchange in the Maya or 3ds Max store.
