Background
Recycled PET bottle flakes are produced from waste beverage bottles through steps such as sorting, crushing, washing, and drying. Therefore, recycled PET bottle flakes can be manufactured wherever beverage consumption occurs. As one of the main markets for importing recycled PET bottle flakes, over 10–13 million tons of PET bottle flakes are imported into China annually.
In 2017, environmental regulations in China became stricter, and the import of waste plastics was completely banned. As part of waste plastics, recycled PET could no longer be imported in any form, including bales or flakes. According to Chinese environmental regulations, recycled plastics must now be imported in the form of granules or chips. This makes it essential for PET bottle flake recyclers to re-pelletize their materials.
As a result of the ban on importing recycled PET bottle flakes, it's now necessary to re-pelletize them. This ensures that they meet the requirements for exporting as granules or chips. The following processing concerns must be addressed:
- Avoid hydrolysis during the re-pelletizing process;
- Large displacement ventilation devices are required to minimize IV value reduction;
- Prevent or reduce yellowing during re-pelletizing;
- Automatic pelletizing methods are needed to reduce labor and ensure stable high output.

- Adequate pre-drying is necessary before re-pelletizing. ACERETECH uses either a venting type compactor or a lifting type drying hopper to remove moisture from the flakes, preventing hydrolysis during the re-pelletizing process;

- Combining the modular design of the processing section with the excellent degassing performance of the twin screw extruder and an automatic three-stage root-type vacuum pump set, the vacuum degassing pressure can reach up to -0.1MPa, ensuring maximum removal of volatiles from PET melts and minimizing IV value reduction;

- Optimized process steps and specialized twin screw extruder designs help continuously and efficiently transform PET flakes from solid to liquid state, avoiding yellowing caused by dead zones or localized high temperatures;
- The strands pelletizing system is a typical method for PET pelletizing. Strands exiting from the extruder die are manually pulled into a water trough for cooling, then dried using an air knife device, cut by the rotary blades of the pelletizer, and formed into granules or chips. This method requires more labor and skilled operation, suitable for PET flake re-pelletizing below 600kg/h;
- However, for high-capacity PET pelletizing, the strands pelletizing method is not suitable. An automatic and reliable underwater pelletizing system is necessary to ensure high output and automation performance.
