ABB is continuing to upgrade the technology. The new phase of ABB's HVDC technology will double its transmission capacity to 3,000 megawatts. The upgraded system is designed to be more compact with a 350% increase in power transmission capacity per unit area. Given the many requirements of the offshore platform or the land-based installation of the converter station, the new design will bring huge benefits to projects such as offshore wind power or grid interconnection. Based on technological innovations in semiconductor power electronic components, the technology doubles the power transmission capacity and transmission distance to better control the HVDC system, reducing the footprint and improving economy.

ABB's Light HVDC technology revolutionizes large-capacity, long-distance power transmission of underground, submarine and overhead lines. Light HVDC technology has achieved leaps and bounds over the past two decades by increasing transmission capacity from 50 MW to 1400 MW, nearly 30 times higher, to meet the electricity needs of millions of households; from 80 KV to 525 kV; transmission distance increased from 70 km to more than 1000 km; transmission loss reduced to less than 1%.

Today, ABB is a technology leader in the field of HVDC and participates in 18 of the 24 HVDC projects in operation worldwide, creating numerous world records such as the world's longest underground project, the most powerful offshore Wind power project, and the first project of overhead line.

The latest technology upgrades have increased voltage levels to 640 kV and increased transmission distances to 2,000 km, resulting in more renewable energy grid interconnections and longer grid interconnections, with further reductions in losses. All of these upgrades save huge costs and bring greater benefits to grid companies.
